Tigray receives just 13% of required fuel, officials say
Only 13% of Tigray’s monthly fuel requirement was delivered in this month, the Tigray Trade and Export Agency said, as severe fuel shortages continue to disrupt public transport, humanitarian operations and public services.
The agency said Tigray requires 15 million liters of fuel per month but received around 2 million liters. “Fuel is not coming according to the demand,” said Teklesh Gebrehiwot, head of public relations at the agency
“Despite repeated engagement with federal authorities to resolve the issue, nothing has changed aside from receiving positive responses,” he added.
The fuel shortage is having far reaching impacts in Tigray, raising the transportation costs and driving up the prices of goods and services.
Humanitarian operations across Tigray faces delays and operational hurdles due to limited fuel availability.
In June 25, 2025, the Tigray Education Bureau announced it was unable to transport thousands of Grade 12 students to exam centers due to lack of fuel.
A widely followed YouTube based media outlet, Ethio-Forum, reported last week that federal authorities had instructed a reduction in fuel shipments to Tigray citing its sources in the federal government.
The federal government has not publicly responded to the allegation.
